What is this program all about?

Q&A with Pastor Nudd

People often have questions about my "presentation" or "performance" of the Mark's Gospel. Those terms can be tricky and even a stumbling block for some Adventists. So here are my best answers to these tricky questions. Enjoy!

 -Jared Nudd

Can you tell us about your presentation?
My presentation is a unique form of storytelling called "biblical storytelling." It's essentially a monologue where I stand up front and recount the entire Gospel of Mark from memory, using only the words of the from the New International Version of the Bible. I do add a few instructions for the audience right before the Last Supper, but otherwise, it's purely the biblical text. It's more than just a talk or a sermon, but it's not a play either. I like to think of it as a powerful and immersive experience where the audience can hear the full narrative of Mark's gospel in one sitting.

What inspired you to memorize the Gospel of Mark?
During my first year in seminary at Andrews University I read about a scholar who had memorized Mark and shared it with audiences. I told my wife about this and she said, “Hey, you should try that!” I had some experience with scripture memorization before and decided to give it a try. It took several years of on-and-off memorization, but with God's help, I eventually succeeded. I shared it for the first time in 2018 at the South Bend First SDA Church.

Why did you choose the New International Version (NIV)?
Choosing the right translation was a crucial decision for me, and I probably spent way too much time trying to decide which one to use. I wanted to balance accuracy with readability and chose the NIV because it strikes that balance well. While some people may prefer other translations, I feel that the NIV is a very good translation into modern English. I knew I would eventually share this with live audiences, so I wanted to memorize from a text that would be easily understood by as many people as possible. (Here is a helpful video explaining why there are differences between the KJV and  modern translations like the NIV).

How long is the presentation?
The presentation is the entire Gospel of Mark, which takes almost 2 hours. While this may seem like a long time, I believe that hearing the story all at once in this format can be a powerful and transformative experience.

Why should I attend this program?
If you're interested in experiencing the full narrative of Mark's gospel in a new and immersive way, then you should definitely attend. This is a chance to hear the story in one sitting, with nothing left out or skipped over. By listening to the Gospel of Mark out loud and from start to finish, you may find a deeper spiritual and emotional impact than when you read it in small portions on your own. It's a unique opportunity to see the Gospel come to life in a way that you may never have experienced before.
